Founder of Brahma Kumaris

Brahma Baba

  • Dada Lekhraj was a prosperous diamond merchant in India and lived a kingly life.  He was devoted to God and family.

  • In 1937, at the age of 60, he had a vision of the bright light of the Supreme Soul who communicated with him and gave him the experience of immense peace.

  • This changed the direction of Lekhraj’s life.  He came to be known as Brahma (the enlightened soul) Baba.

  • Brahma Baba dedicated his life and all his wealth to open a university, which was later named Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University.

  • His wife, daughters, son, daughter-in-law, and other close family members also became instruments for the same cause.  Brahma Baba did not renounce his family or the world; instead, he adopted the whole world as his family.

  • He entrusted young daughters and mothers from all over the world as administrators and spiritual teachers for the University.

  • Brahma Baba was never a guru, saint, or a leader.  He became the first dedicated student of the University.  He played a simple role as an instrument of the Supreme Soul and inspired many other fathers and sons to be the “backbone” of the University.

  • Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University became an institution for families to learn spiritual knowledge and practice Raja Yoga meditation.

  • A university imparts knowledge to all people in the universe.
